On December 11 local time, the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) officially announced that it would impose significant tariffs on certain tungsten products, wafers, and polysilicon exported from China under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.
According to the announcement, from January 1, 2025, the U.S. will impose tariffs up to 50% on imported solar silicon wafers and polysilicon, and an additional 25% tariff on tungsten products.
Analysts point out that this U.S. action may be a response to China’s growing competitiveness in these fields. The implementation of high tariffs may also lead to increased costs for related U.S. domestic enterprises, thereby affecting their market competitiveness and consumer interests. Additionally, this move could escalate trade disputes between China and the U.S., exerting uncertain impacts on the global economic landscape.
China has expressed strong dissatisfaction and opposition to the tariff hikes and called on the U.S. to stop adopting unilateralism and protectionism, resolving trade disputes through dialogue and consultation.
