Barcelona-based solar ingot and wafer manufacturer SUNWAFE SL has been selected as a beneficiary of the Strategic Economic Recovery and Transformation Program (PERTE) funds administered by Spain’s Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO). The company received €199.9 million out of a €297.3 million initial allocation led by the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDEA).

SUNWAFE, backed by European energy innovation agency InnoEnergy (formerly EIT InnoEnergy), aims to achieve 20GW (2.5 billion wafers) of annual production capacity at its Spanish facilities by 2030, according to its website.
The MITECO funding round supports 34 projects focused on strengthening Spain’s domestic renewable energy equipment manufacturing. The majority of funds target electrolyzer and green hydrogen component production, alongside four energy storage projects and one heat pump initiative.
In addition to SUNWAFE, six solar-related projects were selected, including photovoltaic module manufacturers European Solar Cell Company, S.L. and MCPV Manufacturing Spain. MCPV, a subsidiary of Resilient Group building a 4GW heterojunction (HJT) cell factory in the Netherlands, recently announced its Spanish module plant’s inclusion in the government grant program.
All awarded projects span 12 Spanish autonomous communities. MITECO noted the funding leverages the European Commission’s streamlined approval process under the Temporary Crisis and Transition Framework, responding to geopolitical shifts triggered by the Russia-Ukraine conflict and accelerating energy transition goals.
