Mercedes-Benz Develops Solar Paint Technology to Boost EV Range by 12,000 km

Mercedes-Benz is currently testing a revolutionary solar paint technology that could significantly increase the driving range of electric vehicles (EVs). This innovative technology is expected to add an extra 12,000 kilometers of driving distance per year to EVs, injecting new vitality into their popularization and sustainable development.

The solar paint module is just 5 micrometers thick, finer than a human hair, and weighs only 50 grams. When arranged on a vehicle’s surface with an area of 11 square meters (equivalent to a mid-sized SUV), it can generate enough electricity to power the vehicle. Additionally, it can continue to convert solar energy into electricity even when the vehicle is turned off, directly supplying power to the vehicle or storing it in high-voltage batteries for later use. With further technological advancements in the future, excess electricity could even be fed back into the household grid through bidirectional charging technology for efficient energy utilization.

However, it should be noted that the effectiveness of this solar paint is closely related to geographical location. In sunny areas like Los Angeles, this technology could potentially cover a driver’s daily driving distance entirely. In areas with relatively less sunshine, such as Stuttgart, it can meet 62% of a driver’s daily driving needs (an average of 52 kilometers per day).

The application of this solar paint is of great significance for promoting green transportation. It not only helps EVs save energy and extend their driving range but also enables efficient energy utilization through bidirectional charging technology. It is believed that in the near future, this revolutionary solar paint technology will have more application scenarios and bring people a more convenient and environmentally friendly way of travel.
