Japan Aims to Boost Renewable Energy Share to 40-50% by 2040

According to Kyodo News, the Japanese government has embarked on revising its basic energy plan, aiming to significantly increase the share of renewable energy in the country’s energy supply. By 2040, renewables are expected to account for 40-50% of the energy mix, becoming a major source of energy supply.

The new plan focuses on flexible perovskite solar power and wind energy. Yoshihide Suga, Chief Cabinet Secretary, stated that Japan plans to achieve an installed capacity of about 20 gigawatts (GW) of perovskite solar cell projects by 2040, equivalent to the power generation capacity of 20 nuclear reactors. Additionally, the government intends to elevate solar power generation to new heights by 2030.

Meanwhile, nuclear power will account for approximately 20% of energy supply, while thermal power will make up 30-40%. This revision aims to drive the transformation of Japan’s energy structure towards cleaner and more sustainable energy development. The Japanese government vows to fully implement the new plan to ensure the stability and reliability of energy supply.
