JA Solar’s n-type GFI module proved to outperform p-type modules

JA Solar’s webinar on High Efficiency GFI n-type Module Dedicated to Customer Value came to a successful conclusion on Thursday. Experts from JA Solar, IHS Markit, Sungrow and Arctech Solar attended the webinar to present the features of JA Solar’s n-type module DeepBlue 4.0 X, global market trends in 2023, and inverter and tracker system solutions for high efficiency modules.

Tony Zhu, Sales Vice President of JA Solar, said in his opening address that the world is expected to install 350 GW to 400 GW of solar PV next year. To meet the world’s growing demand for PV products, JA Solar has launched the n-type high efficiency module DeepBlue 4.0 X this year.

Monsoon Wang, Global Strategy Account Senior Director from JA Solar, stressed that efficiency improvement is brought by technological innovation, and the reliability, safety, economy and long-term performance of modules are as important as the improvement of module power.

He added that, as the conversion efficiency of p-type PERC cells is approaching its theoretical limit, the commercialization of n-type cell is already underway. The efficiency and power improvement of modules are mainly achieved by higher cell efficiency, efficient encapsulation and large wafers.

JA Solar’s DeepBlue series, including DeepBlue 3.0, DeepBlue 3.0 Pro and DeepBlue 4.0 X, are designed for customer value, said Wang. By considering production, logistics, installation, compatibility and other factors, the modules are based on 182 mm standard size cells, making them ideal for all kinds of application scenarios.

Besides, the modules adopt JA Solar’s patented gapless flexible interconnection (GFI) technology, which increases module power by about 10 W and efficiency by about 0.4%. The technology has now been used on DeepBlue 3.0 Pro and DeepBlue 4.0 X modules.

DeepBlue 4.0 X is a high efficiency n-type module JA Solar has launched in May, 2022. The module adopts n-type passivated contact cell Bycium+ cell and GFI technology. With 22.4% conversion efficiency, the module delivers strong power generation performance due to lower degradation, better temperature coefficient, higher bifacial generation gain and better low irradiance energy yield performance.

The JA Solar and TÜV Nord field test has demonstrated that the power generation of the n-type module based on Bycium+ cells is 3.9% higher than that of p-type PERC module. Test results from different countries and regions prove that DeepBlue 4.0 X module can lower project LCOE by 3.5% to 5%.

Holly Hu, Senior Analyst from IHS Markit, elaborated on the impact of Ukraine-Russia War on renewable development, global solar market overview and supply chain trends.

Hu said that the war in Ukraine has brought up the price of raw materials used in the clean energy supply chain. Despite the surging prices, IHS Markit predicted that the solar additions will reach 266 GW in 2022 and 330 GW in 2023. China will remain the top solar market in 2023, followed by the United States, India, Brazil, Spain, Germany, Australia, Japan, Poland and South Korea, she added.

Robin Li, Global Customer Solution Service Manager at Sungrow introduced innovative inverter system matching the higher efficiency modules. He said that higher efficiency modules will benefit PV system by reducing system cost and DC cable loss. N-type module will become one of the leading products after mono PERC, taking up 50% of the market share, he added.

John Smart, Global Technical Support Director at Arctech Solar, focused on the challenge to design trackers for large size solar modules. He said that the increase in panel length and panel width will both change the tracker design. SkySmartⅡ and SkylineⅡ from Arctech Solar are next generation trackers to solve the large size panel challenge, said Smart. The new trackers are said to provide higher safety and higher performance and lower panel pressure.
