India Approves Land for Another Battery and Module Factory

The government of Odisha state in India has allocated land in the Dhenkanal district to INOX Solar for the construction of a solar cell and module manufacturing facility with an annual production capacity of 4.8 GW each. The project, with an estimated total investment of approximately INR 40 billion (approximately USD 4.82 billion), is expected to create over 3,500 local jobs and contribute to India’s national target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030.

INOX Solar is a subsidiary of the INOXGFL Group, which operates across various sectors including fluoropolymers, fluorochemicals, battery materials, wind turbine manufacturing, and renewable energy. In December 2024, INOX announced its solar manufacturing plan, initially targeting the construction of 5 GW of module and 2.5 GW of cell production capacity by 2026. In March of this year, the company appointed Virender Sharma as its Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to lead the advancement of its photovoltaic manufacturing operations.

The land use application for the factory was approved by the Odisha High-Level Clearance Authority (HLCA), which provides a one-stop investment approval process to facilitate local industrial development.

Mohan Charan Majhi, the Chief Minister of Odisha, stated, “This investment aligns with our vision of transforming Odisha into a green energy powerhouse. By promoting the establishment of solar cell and module manufacturing projects, we are not only fostering sustainable industrial growth but also generating significant employment opportunities and new drivers of economic development for our state.”
