According to data from JMK Research and Analytics, an Indian market research and consulting firm, India’s newly installed solar PV capacity in 2024 reached 24.5GW, marking a year-on-year increase of 145% and setting a new record for annual additions. The cumulative installed capacity has surpassed 98.4GW.
The new installations include approximately 18.5GW of large-scale ground-mounted projects, 4.59GW of rooftop PV, and 1.48GW of off-grid PV, representing year-on-year growth rates of 184.6%, 53%, and 197%, respectively. Notably, rooftop PV saw significant growth driven by the “PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana,” one of the largest rooftop PV programs globally. This program aims to install PV systems in 10 million households and add 30GW of capacity by March 2027. As of the end of 2024, 700,000 rooftop PV systems have been installed.
Among the large-scale ground-mounted projects, Rajasthan contributed 7.09GW, ranking first nationwide, followed by Gujarat with 4.32GW and Tamil Nadu with 1.73GW. Together, these three states accounted for 71% of the country’s newly installed large-scale ground-mounted capacity.
In comparison, India’s newly installed wind power capacity in 2024 was approximately 3.4GW, marking a year-on-year increase of 21%, primarily dominated by Gujarat, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
As of the end of 2024, India’s total renewable energy installed capacity reached 209.44GW, with PV accounting for 47%, continuing to hold the largest share among clean energy technologies.
