The German Federal Solar Industry Association released a bulletin on January 6, 2025, stating that by the end of 2024, Germany’s total installed solar power capacity surpassed 100 gigawatts (GW) for the first time. In 2024, 14% of Germany’s electricity consumption was supplied by solar systems, up from 12% in 2023.
The bulletin revealed that the German solar industry continued to grow in 2024, with over 1 million new solar power systems installed and an additional installed capacity of 17 GW, representing a year-on-year increase of about 10%. The main driver of solar power growth in 2024 was ground-mounted photovoltaic power stations, which added 6.3 GW of installed capacity, a year-on-year increase of approximately 40%. The data also showed that the growth of solar systems installed on residential rooftops slowed down, while those installed on corporate rooftops and residential balconies increased rapidly.
Germany plans to achieve at least 80% of its electricity consumption from renewable energy by 2030. To achieve this goal, the total installed solar power capacity needs to reach 215 GW. The head of the German Federal Solar Industry Association, said, “If market growth continues at a similar scale in the next two years, we will enter the final stretch.”
