Dominion Energy Virginia plans to add 12GW of solar capacity over 15 years

Dominion Energy Virginia has submitted its 2024 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) to the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC), aiming to add 12 GW of solar capacity to its portfolio over the next 15 years. This solar initiative represents a more than 150% increase over the 4.75 GW of generation currently in operation and development.

The plan also includes proposals for an additional 3.4 GW of offshore wind and 4.5 GW of battery energy storage systems (BESS). The government estimates that nearly 80% of the new generation capacity will be zero-carbon, with 20% sourced from natural gas, which will serve as a reliable backup power source.

Additionally, in a separate filing to the SCC on October 15, 2024, the company proposed over 1 GW of new solar projects in Virginia. If approved, these projects would expand its solar portfolio in the state to over 5.75 GW.
