Technology is the real first energy: GCL

Management periodical Tsinghua Business Review recently organized the 5th Tsinghua Business Review Forum on Management Innovation and the 10th Celebration of the Founding of Tsinghua Business Review in Beijing last Saturday.


Zhu Gongshan, chairman of GCL Group attended the event and made a speech on Green and Low-carbon Innovation Practice under Carbon Neutrality Goal.

Zhu Gongshan pointed out that science and technology is the real ‘first energy’. According to him, since 2021, GCL has launched the ‘Phoenix Nirvana’ plan and its own ‘Carbon Neutrality’ action plan. The company entered the photovoltaic industry in 2006, when the foreign enterprises dominated the raw materials, technology and market of polysilicon industry, and the price was as high as US $400/kg at the highest price. China’s polysilicon industry development reached a bottleneck.

Relying on scientific and technological innovation, the company later created the GCL Siemens improvement method, successfully broke the foreign monopoly, reduced the polysilicon price to $60/kg, as well as the comprehensive power consumption from over 200 KWh/kg to about 55 KWh/kg.

Zhu Gongshan pointed out that in order to win in the market, we must ultimately rely on science and technology. He disclosed that even during the pandemic and the ‘painful period’ of GCL’s transformation and upgrading, the company resolutely invested 3% of its annual revenue in the scientific research, and the investment in key scientific research projects was as high as 20%.

Under the background of national goal of reaching carbon neutrality, GCL Group once again stands in the forefront of the world in the field of silicon material scientific and technological innovation. In 2017, it invested heavily in the acquisition of SunEdison, a leading American clean energy enterprise, and its affiliated enterprise MEMC. It was also authorized with 1,481 related patents, successfully realized the complete localization of FBR granular silicon equipment, materials and technology.

This new technology can reduce the investment cost, floor area and labor cost by 1/3, the comprehensive power consumption by 2/3, and the minimum power consumption per kilogram of product can be reduced to 15℃. The company also rapidly increased its annual production capacity to 30,000 tons.

In terms of carbon footprint, the company’s granular silicon has obtained the first authoritative appraisal certificate in the industry at home and abroad, and its carbon footprint performance ranks first in the world.

GCL Group also has layout in new generation photovoltaic technology such as high stability perovskite, perovskite/crystalline silicon tandem solar cells, heterojunction, CCZ efficient monocrystalline technologies and intelligent manufacturing of large-size and efficient photovoltaic modules.

Hydrogen energy integration, including battery materials, charging and replacement, electric transportation platform management, battery to energy storage are also included in the company’s strategic plan.
