The 182mm-wafer-based modules and 210mm PV products may soon become the mainstream in China, seen from the bidding statistics and increasing market share, which will likely to exceed 50% in 2021 and fully prevail in 2022, according to consulting body Solarbe Consulting.

Chen Xiaoda, member of the Standardization Technical Committee of industry body China Photovoltaic Industry Association (CPIA) made speech at the Symposium on Advanced Photovoltaic Technologies and Trends held in Beijing yesterday, and proposed that the size of photovoltaic cells and modules would bring important impact on supply chain and downstream application. CPIA has carried out large amount of work in the module size standardization. The size of 166mm and 210mm modules now has been agreed successively, and the standards have been publicized for industry feedback, said Chen.
With the rapid development of photovoltaic module technology, Chen added that new products emerge in endlessly, and there are many sizes of photovoltaic modules on the market. The standardization of photovoltaic module size has received unprecedented attention from the industry.
He pointed out that the factors affecting the size of modules can be divided into internal factors and external factors. The size of the wafer determines the size of the cell, and then directly affects the size of the module. Different welding technology routes of manufacturers are adopted in the design of the module format, leading to uncertainty in the length of the module. The external influencing factors include packaging, shipping, structure design, and on-site installation and application of power station.
Chen disclosed that the second batch of industry standards released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in 2021 formally included the PV module size standards in the project plan, and the research on module size standards will continue to advance, and eventually be unified among the industry.
