Hong Kong strives to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050

Hong Kong think tank Our Hong Kong Foundation (OHKF) and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) jointly held the symposium on the topic of Accelerating Low-Carbon Innovation Towards Carbon Peak and Neutrality on August 3. Tse Zhenhua, China’s Special Envoy on Climate Change and Vice Chairman of China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development, was invited to participate in the event through videochat.


Tse Zhenhua said that China has made considerable efforts in developing renewable energy. It takes a process from carbon emission peak to carbon neutrality, thus layout should be comprehensively considered. Countries and regions around the world should strengthen cooperation and encourage transformation and innovation in the energy field.

Hong Kong SAR chief executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor also delivered virtual speech. She said that she’s confident about Hong Kong achieving carbon emission reduction target by 2030. The SAR government will also publish a new Blueprint for Hong Kong’s Climate Action by the end of this year to formulate more aggressive carbon reduction strategies and measures to deal with climate change.

Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor said that Hong Kong will strive to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and hopes to fulfill Hong Kong’s responsibility in the cause of carbon reduction. As early as 2017, the SAR government published the Hong Kong Climate Action Blueprint 2030+, announcing the main measures taken to deal with climate change. With the implementation of various measures, Hong Kong is on the way reducing carbon intensity by 65% to 70% by 2030 comparing to that in 2005.

Tung Chee-hwa, Vice Chairman of the CPPCC National Committee and Chairman of OHKF, said in a video speech that China’s carbon reduction goal is a serious commitment to the international community and shows the style of a responsible country. Everyone has a responsibility to deal with climate change. Tung hoped everyone will act together, care for the environment, protect the earth and contribute to the common construction of the community of human and natural life.
