Italy Achieves 6.79GW of New PV Installations in 2024

Italia Solare, the Italian solar photovoltaic association, recently revealed that the Italian solar PV market achieved a year-on-year growth rate of 30% by 2024, with new installed capacity reaching 6.79GW and cumulative installed capacity totaling 37.08GW. In the fourth quarter of last year, new installed capacity approached 1.9GW.

Although the total number of PV systems currently online in Italy stands at 1,878,780, this figure decreased by 25% by 2024, with new installations still amounting to 283,914.

In 2024, the utility-scale segment was the main contributor to new projects, including power projects with a capacity of 1MW or above, which increased by 163% year-on-year, adding 3.045GW, with most projects grid-connected in the second half of the year.

In the commercial and industrial (C&I) sector, solar energy systems with capacities ranging from 20kW to 1MW achieved an annual growth rate of 8%, totaling 1.96GW.

Meanwhile, the capacity of residential systems smaller than 20kW decreased by 21% year-on-year to 1.78GW, which Italia Solare attributed to the end of the country’s Superbonus program.

Paolo Rocco Viscontini, President of Italia Solare, pointed out, “The Italian PV industry is experiencing steady growth, with large-scale systems playing an increasingly prominent role. However, the decline in residential installations cannot be overlooked, and targeted measures need to be taken to support household energy transitions.”

In terms of geographical distribution, Lombardy leads with cumulative installed capacity of 4.99GW, mainly driven by C&I systems between 200kW and 1MW. Veneto (3.76GW) and Puglia (3.63GW) follow closely behind. Lazio has numerous large-scale solar power plants, with new installed capacity in 2024 reaching 1.28GW, a year-on-year increase of 300%.
