Philippines Launches Third Round of Green Energy Auction

In January 2025, the Department of Energy (DOE) of the Philippines announced the official launch of the third round of green energy auctions.

According to Notice No. DC2023-10-0029 (Revised) issued by the DOE, a series of non-FIT (Feed-in Tariff) renewable energy technologies, including pumped storage and geothermal energy, have been successfully incorporated into the green energy auction program.

On November 14, 2024, the DOE officially published the Notice of Auction (NOA) and Terms of Reference (TOR) for GEA-3 through its official website. Subsequently, on December 27, 2024, the first advisory for GEA was released.

Furthermore, on January 4, 2025, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) issued the pricing determination methodology for non-FIT-Eligible renewable energy technologies within the Green Energy Auction Program (GEAP), marking the official kick-off of the first day of the GEA-3 auction activities.

The GEA-3 auction is expected to attract a large number of participants in renewable energy technologies, such as pumped storage, paving the way for renewable energy to occupy a larger share in the power grid energy mix. This will not only enhance the stability and reliability of the power grid but also contribute to achieving a cleaner and more sustainable energy future. Meanwhile, through an open and transparent auction process, competitive selection of renewable energy facilities will be ensured, further promoting the thriving development of the energy industry in the Philippines.
