Roltec, a Polish-based manufacturer of copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) thin-film solar energy, is constructing a new factory in Jerzmanów, Wrocław, Poland. This is the first manufacturing project involving CIGS technology in Poland. According to Roltec, the factory, with a total investment of 250 million Polish złotys (approximately US$60 million), has an annual production capacity of 50MW and is scheduled to commence operations by the end of 2025.
Roltec announced this manufacturing project as early as 2022, with an initial completion date of the end of 2023. However, construction of the factory only officially commenced at the end of 2024, with commercial operations expected by the end of 2025.
According to an official statement, the factory will achieve large-scale production of CIGS components based on technology developed by Roltec’s laboratories and pilot lines. Roltec claims that its frameless CIGS components generate 15% more electricity than silicon-based components per kilowatt of installed capacity.
The Polish Ministry of Development and Technology will provide Roltec with a subsidy of 3 million złotys, to be disbursed in three installments from 2024 to 2026. In September 2024, the European Commission approved a Polish national aid plan worth €1.2 billion to support the manufacture of renewable energy equipment, including photovoltaic components, with Roltec being one of the beneficiaries of this plan.
