Turkey’s Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources has proposed new targets in its 2025 budget plan, aiming for a cumulative solar capacity of 22.6 GW by the end of 2025. Additionally, the wind power capacity is expected to reach 14.8 GW, hydropower 32.4 GW, and geothermal energy 4.9 GW.
These new targets will increase the share of renewable energy in Turkey’s electricity system, fulfilling approximately 47.8% of the country’s electricity demand. This is an increase from an estimated 45% by the end of 2024 and slightly higher than the 42.7% recorded in 2023.
Furthermore, the Turkish government plans to gradually reduce its reliance on natural gas, targeting a decrease from 21.4% in 2022 to 20.7% in 2024, and further down to 18.9% by 2025.
According to data from Turkey’s electricity transmission company, the current national installed solar capacity stands at 18.8 GW, wind capacity at 12.4 GW, hydropower at 32.2 GW, and geothermal capacity at 1.7 GW.
To achieve these targets, the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources anticipates a budget of 45.3 billion Turkish lira (approximately 1.33 billion USD) for 2025.
