India’s TP Solar begins solar cell production at 4.3 GW plant in Tirunelveli

India’s Tata Power announced that its subsidiary TP Solar’s 4.3GW solar cell and module production facility located in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, has started commercial production.

Currently, the solar cell production capacity of this facility is 2GW. And it’s expected to ramp up production with the remaining 2 GW capacity to be added over the next 4-6 weeks, reaching peak production within the next few months. TP Solar stated that the facility is equipped with advanced TOPCon and and Mono Perc technology.

Last September, the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation’s Board of Directors approved the provision of USD 425 million in financing in TP Solar. The company had estimated that the production base would produce the first batch of modules before the end of 2023 and planned to start the production process of cells in the first quarter of 2024. Although the current progress has been delayed by about two quarters.

In 2022, the company signed a memorandum of understanding with the government of Tamil Nadu to establish a 4GW solar cell and module production capacity in the Tirunelveli district.

In addition to the Tirunelveli facility, Tata Power also operates a manufacturing plant in Bengaluru, Karnataka, with a solar module capacity of 682MW and a solar cell capacity of 530MW.
