Azerbaijan launches 1GW solar and wind projects with Masdar

President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan and Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Chairman of Masdar, and COP28 President, presided over the inauguration ceremony, emphasizing the importance of this partnership in advancing sustainable energy goals.

The projects include the Bilasuvar Solar PV Project (445MW), the Neftchala Solar PV Project (315MW), and the Absheron-Garadagh Onshore Wind Project (240MW). They form a crucial part of Azerbaijan’s strategy to derive 30 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2030.

Key figures at the ceremony highlighted the transformative impact of these projects, which are expected to generate 2.3 billion kWh annually, saving over 500 million cubic meters of natural gas and preventing more than 1 million tons of carbon emissions.

While these initiatives mark a huge step towards renewable energy adoption, challenges remain in terms of infrastructure development and regulatory frameworks. Overcoming these hurdles is crucial for ensuring the long-term sustainability of Azerbaijan’s renewable energy endeavors.

Established in 2006, Masdar has played a pivotal role in advancing renewable energy globally. With projects spanning over 40 countries and a cumulative capacity exceeding 20 GW, Masdar aims to expand its renewable energy portfolio to 100 GW by 2030.
