The “Coalburn 1” project is set to be connected to the grid and operational by the first quarter of 2025. It will utilize Canadian Solar’s Solbank energy storage system, enhancing the efficiency of the power plant and balancing local electricity demand and supply, thus improving the stability and reliability of the UK grid.

Located in a former coal mining community in Scotland, the project plays a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions, improving air quality, and contributing to global efforts against climate change.

Once operational, it is estimated to reduce approximately 1.6 million tons of CO2 emissions over the next 14 years.

Colin Parkin, President of e-STORAGE, expressed his honor in partnering with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners’ Flagship Fund to implement the largest energy storage project in the UK.

He highlighted that through this project, Canadian Solar has already delivered nearly 2 GWh of energy storage systems in the UK market. This contribution supports the efficient delivery of renewable energy in the country, strengthens its resilience to future climate change, and helps lower consumers’ energy costs.

Canadian Solar’s SolBank is a containerized energy storage solution designed for large-scale ground-mounted power plants. It incorporates long-cycle-life lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology, along with an active balanced battery management system (BMS) and efficient thermal management system (TMS).

With the “Coalburn 1” project, Canadian Solar continues to demonstrate its commitment to developing innovative and sustainable energy solutions, contributing to the global transition towards a low-carbon future.
