China’s auto maker Geely bets big on polysilicon

Geely Holding Group, Geely Auto’s parent company, celebrated the start of production for its phase one polysilicon facility in Gucheng county, Hubei province of China on May 21st. The polysilicon facility, named the Geely Silicon Valley, will be constructed in three phases with RMB 5 billion total investment.

Geely Technology Group, a company under Geely Holding, is responsible for the construction of the Geely Silicon Valley. The facilities will be dedicated to the research and production of 6N solar grade polysilicon.

Currently, the facility with a production capacity of 2,000 MT has started production. The phase two project with 10,000 MT capacity is also under construction. For the third phase, the company will build a 40,000 MT polysilicon facility.

Once completed, the Geely Silicon Valley will be able to produce over 50,000 MT of solar grade polysilicon each year, generating about RMB 10 billion output value.

Xu Zhihao, CEO of Geely Technology Group, said that the PV industry has entered an unprecedented stage of rapid development in the world. As an important material for PV modules, polysilicon has great market potential. He believes that the demand for polysilicon will see an explosive growth.
