Vietnam excludes solar in energy backup capacity in latest power plan

Vietnam has announced plans to reduce its power capacity by 2030 by over 13 percent to 155,700 MW in the eighth national power plan for the period 2021-2030.

This means the investment will drop by nearly VND800 trillion ($34.48 billion), according to Dang Hoang An, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of Vietnam.

The ministry also reduced the planned capacity for 2045 by 9.7 percent to 333,590 MW, and excluded solar power from Vietnam’s energy backup capability to ensure power security.

Dang Hoang An mentioned that, this is because solar power is unstable, and “a cloud passing by could reduce capacity by 40 percent”.

However, the prospect for wind power is promising.

Mathias Hollander, senior manager at Copenhagen Offshore Partners, said Vietnam could develop 5-10 GW of offshore wind power by 2030, creating $60 billion in added value to the economy.
